Obaachan's garden

I think obaachan is a very strong women. She went to other country because she didn't want to be at Japan. Even though I don't wanted to be at Japan, I think I can't do that because I'm not brave enough to do that. I think she had a hard time because she had no acquaintance there, and also, I think it was very hard to make herself understood. And, she had to work there to pay some money back! If I was her, I won't do that because it's too hard too to me. She really is a strong women!! But I didn't get what her "secret" was. Is that a fact that she was supposed to marry a different man first?
