Mermaid

Setting: Far away country, in 1960s, when freedom of speech and thought were forbidden.

Conflict: A boy versus the government.
               A boy versus himself.

Climax: A boy became a mermaid. I think mermaid he met was  his delusion since he was suffering from awful government which suppress freedom of  imagination. He was looking for someone who could help him. He drowned himself and  became mermaid, so he got freedom at last. This thought may be extreme, but I think becoming mermaid means boy's death and he got perfect freedom.

Symbols: Mermaid  is a symbol of imagination. A boy could see mermaid because he had imagination. However, his parents and other adults don't know the joy of daydream, so only boy could see mermaid.
Sea is a symbol of freedom because mermaid and boy can swim freely in the sea as if they were not restricted by anything.

Irony: A boy couldn't see mermaid after the government tried to forget him the existence of mermaid.

Theme: Freedom of imagination must be protected. Everyone has the right to imagine without interference. Don't forget the joy of daydream.
