Mermaid

Characters
The boy, the mermaid, the police.

Setting
In a time not so long ago, in a place where imagination was forbidden. Most probably takes place in a sea-town.

Ambition
The boy only wanted to be together with the mermaid and tried his best to convince everyone that he was not imagining things.

Conflict
The boy is arrested by the police for day-dreaming and is thoroughly questioned and tortured until he begins to forget about the mermaid.

Ending
The boy breaks out of the institute and runs home to the mermaid only to find that it was only a fish. He takes the fish to the ocean where he and the fish turn into a merman and mermaid and swim off into the sunset.

Reality and Fantasy
I believe that the mermaid was in fact real. The country was so strict about not allowing anything related to fantasy that normal people saw a mermaid as a fish. And as the boy started to become brainwashed, he also saw the mermaid as a normal fish. In the end, everyone saw that the mermaid actually exists.

Theme
Imagination has two sides. The good and the bad. The good side brings us happiness and lets us escape the cruelty of reality. On the other hand, it distracts us from our duties we have in our real life.
