literary terms of mermaid

This story was very sad and attractive for me. Comparing with oktapodi, there are many literary terms in the story.

setting: in the past(between the end of 19th century and present), faraway country,
i think because an electric chair was used for the first time in the U.S. in
             the end of 19th century.
conflict: a boy who is daydreaming vs everything(ex, society) except for a mermaid.
climax: i think the climax of this story is when the boy went into sea with the mermaid
(a fish?), he turned into a mermaid as well as her.
symbol: the sea or water represents life because the boy cannot see the mermaid
              without water.
mermaid is also a symbol of the boy's hope or desire.
probably he wanted some friends to play with.
irony: when the boy went home, he couldn't see the mermaid. it was unexpected.
theme: it's important for us to have a strong will. even if others criticizes your ideas,
stick to your beliefs to the end.
