Golden Week Assignment: Oktapodi
Watch Oktapodi and apply the Literary Terms (except for Point of View) that we learned in class to this story. What's the plot (the basic story)? Who are the main characters? Can you find the six terms: setting, conflict, climax, symbol(s), irony, and theme? Post your answers on the blog. Please spellcheck all postings. Blog on!
Banana..
The banana..
The main characters in this clip where the man and his.. friend(?)
The man woke up realizing his room was such a great mess, and remembering that his parents were coming to visit his house. Of course, every one would panic. Like, totally freak out. Well, I would anyway.
As he was panicking his friend taught him 7 ways a banana could be useful.
1) The banana was able to turn into a shoe shiner.
2) It's able to polish leaves, if there are plants in your house.
3) Scratchy bug bites can be reduced.
4) Polishing wooden furniture.
5) Cosmetics can be taken off.
6) The scratches from CD's can be taken off.
7) It can also turn in to a fruit fly trap.
With his friends cleverness and the usefulness of a banana, the man was able to meet his parents with a smile. (:
Yesterday.
Scary movies
I really like scary movies, but I got too used to it that it's not as scary as it used to be. I wish I can find a good scary movie that will make me jump.
A period of transition
By the way the "Chicken Namban" in the cafeteria is great! I think it's very tasty and has a lot of chicken for it's price.

part time job2
As I said before, I am doing a teacher at a cram school.
When I just started this job, I alway thought that I wanted to quit it because I thought I wsn't good at teaching, but now, since I got used to it, I am a little having fun teaching English and Math.
Sometimes it is difficult to calm down the elementary school students, but I am sure they are doing thier best. I am still having difficult teaching grammers to the high school students, but i am studying it before the class so I am learning it too. Now, I am feeling i would continue this work for a while.
bananas
He didn't notice that his parents will come at 12:30 until the day his parents come,
and he had a big party the day before and his room was a mess.
He started to clean, and when was about to throw away the bananas, his friend from the party last night, stopped it.
His friend showed him 7 unexpected ways to use a banana.
There were
1. Rub any kind of things made of leather (shoes, jacket) with the banana peal.
2. Wipe the leaves of the plant with the banana peal and remove the dusts and dirts and make it shine.
3. Rub the furniture with the actual banana and wipe it with a cloth.
4. Smear the banana peal where there is a mosquito bite.
5. Erase the stain of a paint with the banana peal.
6. Remove the CD scratch by rubbing the banana peal.
7. Catch the fruit flies by putting a banana into a half folded plastic bag, and wait an hour or two and throw it away.
At the end of the story, the man's parents arrived.
The man's friend has special knowledge about banana because I think he was researching about banana for a long time.

Pensieve
I suppose that's one of the reasons why I carry an iPod touch set to "Notes" here and there - to write down ideas that hatch in my head that I would love to masticate on later - not always reliable, but good enough for now. It just popped into my mind while writing this down that this thought receptacle would almost be like a Pensieve from Harry Potter. I would slowly pour in the thoughts that I've kept aside, and voilà...
Would I try this? maybe...
Bananas bananas bananananas
A young man wakes up in a total chaos. It seem like he was partying crazy the night before.
As he wakes up, he ralizes that his parents are going to visit him that afternoon at 12:30. He starts panicking because he needs to clean his dirty apartment. Luckily a friend is there to give him a hand. His friend suggests him to use some overripe bananas which were left from the party to clean the apartment.
The young man being a bit confused is taught how to use bananas in seven unexpected ways.
1. clean shoes or anything made of leather
2. remove dust and dirt
3. polish
4. treat mosquito bites
5. erase ink stains
6. remove scratches on CDs
7. get rid of fruit flies
At the end his aparment is clean thanks yo his friend's help. There is also an informative narration which says American eat 28 pounds of bananas a year whereas people in Uganda eat 500 pounds per year.
In reality, his friend is a banana fairy! That explains why he has so much knowledge about bananas. No just joking ;)

Bananas
I thought that the two guys had a party at one of the guys house. The guy with his house fithy remembered that his parents will come today. His hippy friend who knows alot about plants shows him natural ways to use bananas.
1. They used banana peels to polish leather shoes
2. They used banana peels to remove dust
3. They polished wooden furniture using the inside using a banana
4. They rubbed mosquito bites using banana peels
5. They erased ink stanes
6. They rubbed banana peels on scratched CDs
7. They catched fruit flies putting bananas inside a plastic bag placing the opening down
At the end, they cleaned up on time
Going bananas
The video starts off by showing us the aftermath of a party. Person 1 (I'll call him Homely from now on) wakes up to find that his home is a mess - and only hours away from being visited by his parents. Homely, hands on head in shock, immediately starts to clean the house. Just as he's about to throw away some overripe bananas, when Person 2 (Caveman, a rare specimen of Homo sapiens bananavorus) comes to the rescue.
The first was using a banana peel to clean leather shoes, and the second was to also use a peel to wipe dust off household plants. Thirdly, Caveman shows us that pieces of an overripe banana could be used to polish wooden, lacquered furniture. A banana skin could stop a bug bite from stinging and also remove ink stains from human skin. Finally, banana pieces can be used to clean off scratches on CDs, as well as trap fruit flies when put in a plastic bag. As they say, time flies like an arrow and fruit flies like a banana; the characters manage to clean their house barely on time and the parents come at 12:30. Clearly, they've had fun going bananas.
Knowledge of how bananas can be used in many different purposes is definitely something that I'll keep in mind every time I eat one from now on.
As for who Caveman is, who knows? Since he knows so much about bananas, maybe he's studying biology and chemistry, or grew up in Uganda (the top consumer of bananas worldwide), or even an imaginary friend.
7 unexpected ways to use bananas
1. Polish leather.
2. Wipe dust off plants.
3. Polish wooden furniture.
4. Heal stings from insects.
5. Erase ink stains.
6. Remove scratches from CDs.
7. Get rid of fruit flies.
There are two main characters. One person lives in the house and is freaking out about his parents visiting at 12:30. At 12:30, the man was going to receive a visit from his parents. The problem is, the man seems to have forgotten all about it, and had a crazy party the night before. The house is a mess, and the man has to clean it all up before his parents come.
The other is a man with long hair. He seems to be a visitor or a friend of the man who lives in the house, because he isn't flustered like the other man. The man with the beard is the one who teaches the poor owner of the room how to clean his house using overripe bananas.
In the end, thanks to the man with the long hair, the house is cleaned up, and everything is ready for the parents' visit.
I'm guessing that the bearded man was so knowledgeable about bananas because he went to an Earth Day festival and was shocked at how much bananas were being wasted. So, after that he researched a lot about bananas and how to use them.

Point match with an oracle
Banana Jesus
hope you had a lot of fun!
well, let me explain the use of banana in smart way that not so many people are aware!;3
Before you start, you need to prepare:Overripe banana, lint-free cloths and resealable plastic bag!
1: Rub the inside of anything made of leather such as shoes, jacket with the peel of banana and finish it with lint-free cloths
2: Wipe off the leaf of houseplant using banana peel that will help you to get rid of dust and dirt and give more soft and shiny
3: Polish the scratch on the shelf to let them disappear and wipe off with cloths to finish it
4: Put the banana peel onto your skin where you're bitten by mosquite
5: Erase the make-up on face or paints with banana peel
6: Take the banana peel and remove the scratches on the CDs then wipe off with cloths
7: Put banana peel in a plastic ziplog bag with top half sealed down and wait 1 hour until all the flying insects are gathered in that bag and then seal the top and throw it away outside.
the situation is very speedy I guess
a skin-headed man are trying to clean the messy room for the visit of his parents at 12:30 and another bearded man is giving him so many tips how to do it for him.
So obviously they must be friend.
bearded man has lots of knowledge about the use of banana...by the way, my first impression about him was actually "Wow, he just looks like Jesus!" lol
anyway, back to the topic,
the jesus guy propably come from Uganda where the consumption of banana is the highest because if it is true, actually it can convince me why he is super familier for the use of banana.
and in the end of this video clip, a narrator guy is telling us about the highest banana consumption country and America's consumption in a year. A bearded guy left room after skin-headed guy succeeded to clean the house, and I guess he is telling us not to waste anything even though we think that it is no use. from that action, we can be friendly to the world and part of helping.
That was my interpretation.
Thanks!
About the video of seven different unexpected ways to use a banana
These are the seven unexpected ways you can use a banana to clean the house.
1. Rub the inside of a banana peal on things made of leather. This helps to polish and clean leather
Products.
2. Rub banana peals on plant leaves. It helps to keep plant looking shinny and clean.
3. Rub the inside of an over ripe banana on wood furniture and wipe off with a cloth. This also helps
to polish funiture.
4. Rub banana on mosquito bite. It helps to take away the sting.
5. Rub banana peal on ink stains. It helps to instantly remove ink.
6. Rub banana peal on scratched CDs. It helps to take off the scratches off CDs.
7. Put over ripe bananas in a plastic ziplock bag with the top half folded down. Leave on the table
and wait for the fruit flies to gather. Once they settled unfold the top half, zip the zip lock and
throw away the bag. It helps as a fruit flie catcher.
So the skin head man is able to clean his house with the knowledge and help of the beared man. What happens ag the end is they had the house clean just in time as the skin head man's parents ring the door bell. The skin head man rushes to the door as the beared man throws away one last coke can and rushes out the back door.
In my opinion the beared man had so much knowledge of bananas because he used to live in Uganda. At the end of this video there is a narration showing the most consumers of bananas are Ugandan. And from his ruff beared features perhaps he's into organic and natural things. This is my interpretation of the video. I look forward to reading everyone else's interpretations as well.

The feedback on the banana video
1.Rub anything that's made out of leather with inside of banana peel.
2.Rub the plant leaves to make them shine.
3.Rub a table with pieces of overriped bananas and wipe off.
4.Rub mosquito bite with banana peel
5.Rub ink with banana peel
6.Wipe CD with banana peel
7.Gather fruit flies by putting some banana peels and fruit inside a plastic bag and leave it on a table for a while.
A man had a big party last night at his house and he woke up to find out that his parents are coming over to his house at 12:30PM. However, the rooms were dirty and he decided to clean those rooms with a guy who was also at his house.
The main characters were a guy who lives in his house and a guy who was with the guy who lives in the house. I think that the second guy was a friend of the house owner and was invited to the last night's party. They cooperated to clean the house.
At 12:30, the house owner's parents are coming over. This is why the boys are cleaning the house.
At the end of the video, the owner's parents rang the bell. The owner's friend went away from the other side of the front door.
I think that the house owner's friend had knowledge about bananas because maybe he was an Ugandan. At the end of the video, the narrator was talking about how many bananas Ugandan consume. I thought that explanation relates to the characters of the video.

ESS
Just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed...
"Raindrops keep falling on my head
but doesn't mean my eyes will soon
be turning red
crying's not for me, 'cause
i'm never gonna stop the rain by complaining
because i'm free
nothing's worrying me
nothing's worrying me."
I used to sing this song in my primary school. Sometimes I just sit up at night, listen to songs that I used to sing and listen to and just reminiscence. I miss the days when I used to run around and not think difficultly.
But I guess complaining and wishing to go back won' t take me anywhere and it's definitely not going to make me any younger so... even though the weather isn't in the best condition I hope this week will be full of smile and laughter.

part time job
I am writiing this blog half a sleep.
I am writing it this late, because I had a part time job until 11o'clock.
My part time job is a teacher at a cram school.
After coming back from home, I had to eat dinner and take a shower and finally I started my media discussion report.
I just finished it and now I am writing the blog. After I write this blog I am going to jump into my bed.
And I have a question. Have you guys already started reading the book?
Because I haven't yet. I was just wondering.
Well, I think that is it for tonight.
Good night.
Before I sleep
This is my 1st trial to work as a tutor in my life therefore everything seems complicated and makes me confused...
It was kinda my small dream that I wanted to achieve while I am in university to be tutor.
every time when I helped my friend for study, I used to get passion and enthusiasm by teaching them.
of course I'm super nervous since i have to take heavier responsibility compared to the most of other part time job. but I trust in myself that nothing is impossible for me as long as I try my best.(Well, I hope so)
Wish me luck everyone;)!
and good night, see you all tomorrow with lots of homework!

Mermaid
well it is already 1 am so most of you might be swimming in the dream now
however, i was trying to post on thins blog but for some technical reason,
I couldn't log in up to now.
So here, I'm gonna re-write to give my feedback for Mermaid.
The main characters is a dreamy boy in a distant country and a beautiful mermaid who turns to be the ordinal fish to other peoples' eyes around him.
When A boy encountered the young mysterious mermaid, he naturally fell in love with her.
Day by day, his love for her was becoming bigger and powerful.
One day he took her to his home and kept in water tank in order to introduce her to his family,
however it was just a fish to other peoples' eyes including his family. Nobody could recognize her as a human even though he was claiming that she is a definitely beautiful mermaid to his eyes. That is why he was began to treat as a weirdo by others for that reason.
He struggled a lot and felt alone since nobody could understand him at all.
But still he've never forgotten about her existence and good memory he spent with her.
In the end, he made up his mind to release her back the sea where he found her and then the beautiful mermaid came back with smile he used to see.
This short animation is very interestning and great for 1964. what makes more interesting is that even it has no audio, it gives us lots of imagination and think deeply to understand what is going on.
I'm yet to come up with the answer for what is the theme and message for this animation,
however, the author might be hoping to deliver the meaning that people can only enjoy their lives within our territory and when we crossed the line, nothing can be excused including love? maybe.
I really have no idea but that's how I conclude here^^
Thanks for reading!
What I did recently.

Mermaid - Osamu Tezuka
In Tezuka's video "Mermaid" from the year 1964 a boy is tortured for seeing
things differently than the others.
He is daydreaming at the beach when he finds a little fish in a puddle.
After returning the fish into the sea, it transforms into a mermaid.
He takes the Mermaid home and shows it to his parents. However, his parents and all the other people
can't see the mermaid. He has been imagining it.
He keeps on believing in the mermaid but is getting a therapy because of that. He's tortured and manipulated
by the military to make him think the way they want to.
Finally he runs away to bring the Mermaid back to the ocean and eventually dies.
My thoughts on the video:
Since the video was made after WWII I can imagine that the message was
about being oppressed and forced to adapt to the ideals of the
government. Thinking, differently and standing out was a danger so people were educated or even tortured to become "normal" and to obey.
Also, Tezuka may wanted to imply that the way of education in Japan was going to literally kill creativity as we were able to see at the ending. The boy is returning into the ocean with the mermaid which is symbolizing creativity/imagination
. Eventually he and with him his creativity dies.
I felt very sad seeing the video clip but at the same time felt that we have to appreciated our current environment where
we are not as oppressed as the people at that time. Sadly, there are still many countries where people are not allowed to think freely or state their opinions.

my thoughts on the mermaid story
Mouth of Truth
Everyday when I make my commute to Aogaku, I pass what seems to be an Italian tourism bureau three-quarters of the way up from the bottom of the valley. Sitting in front is a near-full size replica of the Bocca della Verità (the Mouth of Truth), a circular sculpture with a man's face on it. The Mouth was said to be a lie detector that would bite liars' hands off. I remember, visiting Rome as a young child, seeing the original in all its glory and being afraid of putting my hand in the mouth lest it be bitten off (so naïve!). That's not the point, though.
People who took the Introduction to Global Literary Theory course on 3rd period Friday would remember that we watched small excerpts from the 1953 romantic comedy Roman Holiday to analyze the cinematography. At one point, we see Hepburn's and Peck's characters loitering in front of the Mouth. Joe Bradley, Peck's character, shoves his hand into the mouth and then acts as if he lost his hand and Hepburn's, Princess Ann, falls for the trick. What most people see as nothing more than a small gag here is actually an important indicator of Her Highness and Mr. Bradley's growing affection for each other.
Now, every time I pass that face, I think back to the time I put my hand in the original Mouth and the scene in Roman Holiday. Sometimes I can't help but grin at what it means to me.
Mermaid
I think the main character is the boy but maybe Tezuka is projecting himself onto this boy.
Even though he was said to be a genius, I think he was maybe feeling a little anxious that he was a bit different on the wavelength from the others.
And this movie is showing that he wants the others to understand the difficulty of people not understanding himself.
From the history of himself getting bullied in his childhood, and saying that when he was in his own world drawing manga and being in a fantasy world was his only relieving time, I think this boy, the main character is exactly him.
The problem is that he is not even understood by his parents that he can see a mermaid not a fish.
People around him not seeing the mermaid, and him being thought that he was a weirdo.
In the end, the boy also becomes aspirated into the imagination world.
I think this means that Tezuka thought that he doesn't have to be clicked in by everyone, and would rather do his own things that he wants to do.
It might just be a few minutes movie, but thinking about his backwards, it's a really impressing one.
An Analysis on Osamu Tezuka's "Mermaid"
His logical side prevails for a while and his "mermaid" turns into a normal fish. Yet, in a sudden twist, he escapes the totalitarian state with his fish and wades into the sea. Taken literally, it could be seen as suicide, while metaphorically, the act could be seen most familiarly as a bid for freedom. However, I think it's best to take the time the animation was made, the 1960's, into context.
In Japan, the 1960's was a time of extreme societal growth and education was not excluded from that. As having an education became a more attractive idea to the populace, Tezuka must have realized the danger of not being able to stand out in public institutions, as in free thought and creativity.
chaos of moving!
I really enjoy reading everyone's thoughts about the animation NIngyo.
Its interesting to compare them with my own and see the differences and similarities.
Well, the third week is about to begin! The IE classes are giving out lots of homework, and I hope I can keep up.
My family and I have just finished moving in my grandmother's house. Actually, we have been, for around 3 days, but my older sister's friend was visiting from the States, so we have been unable to unpack or clean up. This morning, my sister's friend left for the States, so my family and I have been moving around the furniture and cleaning things up as best as we could. Finally, after two days of not being able to see the floor, I can move around my room without having to jump over mounds of cardboard boxes. Of course, some of the furniture are still out of place and there are still many things we have to unpack. However, I finally feel like we've "moved in." This is going to be my new home.
Oh no, my nose is stuffed from the house dust flying around...

My analysis on the mermaid video
about the mermaid
I think the main character is the boy, and he wanted to share to everyone what he saw and brought from the ocean, which is the mermaid. However, everybody except the boy couldn't see the mermaid. To them, it was just an ordinary fish. Everyone thought it was just his imagination, and that was the problem, because his country didn't allow people to imagine. He just wanted everyone to know about the mermaid, but he couldn't make himself understood. He was put in a jail and was made to forget about the mermaid. At the end, he forgot about the mermaid, and released the fish, but then, the fish turned into a mermaid again and the boy went into the ocean with the mermaid to get freedom. I think Tezuka wanted to tell us that imagination is not a bad thing, and everyone can imagine what they want unless it wouldn't do harm to other people.
Weekend
Nice to meet you!
My name is Kent Aihara, otherwise known as Bryan. I like to be referred to as Bryan, so please call me by my English name.
I'm sorry I took a while to write anything on this blog; I'd been pretty much unaware of its existence until the last IE core class, and after that I was pretty much engaged with other things until now.
A quick introduction to myself:
I was born in the United States, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
I've been moving between Japan and the U.S. back and forth, living in each place for about 3 to 5 years before going back to said country.
I've experienced too much during all my years of living, (although I'm still young) to be able to write and share a lot of myself with you guys, so I guess I will talk about something that is more recent and fresh in my memory.
Yesterday, I attended the freshmen recruiting/welcoming session for our university's gliding club. I have always been interested in aircraft and flying, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity for myself to get involved in something different than what I did in high school.
The flying experience itself was a marvelous one. After entering the cockpit, the instructor familiarized me with the controls of the glider. There are three main controls which are essential to flying these: the rudder, the elevator, the ailerons, and the air brakes.
The take-off itself is done with the help of the winch, which flings the glider off to the sky at a speed of around 120 km to 130 km. Then the instructor told me to familiarize myself with the actual controls in-flight. I stepped on the rudder pedals, and shifted the control stick back-and-forth, but other than that I did not do much.
After safely landing on the aerodrome, I exited the aircraft and tried to deal with the motion sickness. (I really shouldn't have eaten 4 rice balls before taking off) Anyway, the itself was a splendid one, and even though the monthly fee is a tad bit expensive, I really look forward to joining the glider club.
Here are some pictures from yesterday's flight:

What I thought about Mermaid
He wanted people around him to know about happy time with mermaid, but they had abandoned their ability of imagination because of the national power, so they didn't believe what he said.
National power tried to deprive him of his ability of imagination, and he barely lost it, but finally, he could meet mermaid again.
I think that Tezuka Osamu wanted to assert that everyone has a right to imagine as she or he likes.
Friday
There were a lot of topics to talk, mostly about our University life.
I made a lot of new friends in University, but taking good care of my old friends are important too.
Anyway, we had a really great time! I want to meet her soon again.
