Living in foreign countries

I think there are many people who has stayed in some foreign countries.
I understand the difficulty to talk with the foreigners fluently because
I have stayed at Australia and France, too. ( But only a few days. )
In my case, looking back I see that I had a trouble to speak my opinion
by English. So, it might not be enough for my host family to understand
what I said and I couldn't have a good conversation with them.
I suppose the cause was that I got confused about the difference of
the custom and the lifestyle. It was difficult for me to overcome the
hardship only a few days. So, I want to ask you the difficulty or difference
( except language)you felt during the home stay and studying abroad.
And then, I want to know the strange custom the country only has.
For example, my host family always drink green teas in the afternoon.
But, it was not green teas like japanese drink. It is hard to describe the
taste. The only thing I can mention is awful.
