Obaachan's Garden

  1. How old was Linda Ohama's grandmother when Linda discovered her secret?
She was 100 years old.
  1. Why did Asayo Murakami emigrate to Canada? (What is a "picture bride"?)
She emigrated to Canada in order to make a living. A picture bride refers to a practice where immigrant workers got married on the suggestion of a matchmaker who exchanged photographs between the potential grooms and brides. This was one of the very few ways women could immigrate to a different country.
  1. What secret did Linda Ohama discover about her grandmother, Asayo Murakami?
She discovers that upon leaving for Canada, Murakami had to leave two of her children behind.
  1. What are some good things about Obaachan?
She appreciated art, in a way that she played the violin, as well as enjoyed making flower gardens.
  1. What makes it seems that Asayo Murakami was not an ideal parent?
Most will argue that she is not an ideal parent due to the fact that Murakami left her seven children at home to go out with her friends almost everyday. She left them to do their own chores regardless of how young these children were.
  1. What is the most wonderful, touching scene in the film?
The scene where Murakami was running around the field with her violin in her hands, upon finding out that Hiroshima had been bombed. The reference to the painting Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth definitely made this scene more moving.
  1. If you were to make a film about a family member, who would you pick and why?
I would love to make a film focusing on my grandmother's life. She was born right in the middle of World War II, thus the making of this documentary will most likely help me understand history a little better.
