Obaachan's garden

Obachan’s Garden directed by Linda Obama

Obachan's Garden by Linda Ohama - NFB

  1. How old was Linda Ohama’s grandmother when Linda discovered her secret? 100

  2. Why did Asayo Murakami emigrate to Canada? (What is a “picture bride”) She thought that Canada would be a better place for her. A picture bride is a marriage made up by sending pictures of each other.

  3. What secret did Linda Ohama discover about her grandmother, Asayo Murakami?

Asayo Murakami had two children she was separated from when she had to divorce with her former husband. She keeps photos and memories of them and hides them away from her new family, only bringing them out when she’s alone.

4. What are some good things about Obaachan? She's a social butterfly who makes it seem like flowers surround her wherever she walks. Instead of vegetables, she grows lots of flowers to brighten up the place.

5. What makes it seem that Asayo Murakami was not an ideal parent? She was always keeping a secret from the other children she had, always wanting to go back to Japan.

6. What is the most wonderful, touching scene in the film? The violin being fixed and returned to Obaachan.

7. If you were to make a film about a family member, who would you choose and why?

Honestly, I would write about my dog. She's the person who gives everyone in the family a sense of comfort and affection.
