Obachan the avant-garde of the east

Sorry guys, no interesting analysis from me, I’m quite desperate to finish this

  1. How old was Linda Ohama’s grandmother when Linda discovered her secret?

    Around her 100th birthday.

  2. Why did Asayo Murakami immigrate to Canada? (What is a “picture bride”)

She immigrated to marry a man whom payed her to come to Canada. She was a picture bride, meaning the marriage was solely decided with pictures of each other.

  3. What secret did Linda Ohama discover about her grandmother, Asayo Murakami?

Before traveling to Canada, Asayo had a a husband and two children. They were separated when her husband went to work of the emperor.

4. What are some good things about Obaachan?

She cherished her friends and connection with people. She would bring beauty wherever she went with her gardens and music.

5. What makes it seem that Asayo Murakami was not an ideal parent?

She was always out of the house to fill her loneliness. She left the children to do all the work while she met up with her friends. Plus the overwhelming regret for her two former children that she never let go of.

6. What is the most wonderful, touching scene in the film?

The scene with the fire. Something about the contrast of the warmth of the fire and the coldness of Asayo’s heart was beautiful to me.

7. If you were to make a film about a family member, who would you choose and why?

I would choose to film my father as most of his life before my birth is unknown and I would get to connect with my Turkish heritage.
