Obachan's Garden, Linda Ohama

How old was Linda Ohama's grandmother when Linda discovered her secret?

She had been 100 years old.

Why did Asayo Murakami immigrate to Canada? What is a 'picture bride'?

Asayo was betrothed to a Japanese immigrant living in Canada. A picture bride refers to choosing a bride via a matchmaker, who paired couples using only photographs and family recommendations.

What secret did Linda Ohama discover about her grandmother, Asayo Murakami?

Ohama discovered that her grandmother had been forced to abandon her two young daughters when she left Japan for Canada.

What are some good things about Obachan?

She appears to be a very talented woman. Being able to dance and play the violin well. She also appeared to love growing her flower garden.

What makes it seem that Asayo Murakami was not an ideal parent?

Asayo would sometimes neglect her children, leaving them to cook their own meals and such while she would leave nearly every day to go to town. Ohama's own mother even bursts into tears, complaining bitterly about the neglect she suffered as a child.

What is the most wonderful, touching scene in the film?

The most touching scene in the film was Asayo and Chieko meeting again after 75 years. But another scene that really left an impression on me was when Asayo ran through the field after finding out about the Hiroshima Bombing--playing the violin haphazardly while crying and screaming.

If you were to make a film about a family member, who would you choose and why?

I would make a film about my mother who had experienced life in many countries like Australia, Hong Kong, America, and Japan. She had also grown up in the Philippines during the Martial Law, so I think it would be interesting to make a documentary about her experiences, how she immigrated to Japan, and the difficulties of being a mother to three children.
