Hugo is a short, but definitely impressive piece of film. The way they contrast the individuals personalities, focusing on human ego and value of life, it had attracted me a lot and I found it very interesting.
There are three main characters in Hugo, the protagonist Desma, antagonist Celestine, and the eponymous Hugo the moss. Desma and Celestine are both students, who are competing each other against a science project.
Although I have said that the antagonist is Celestine, half way through the film, it seems more like Desma is the antagonist not Celestine. It is up to the viewer whether they support a certain character and agree/disagree with them, the position of the protagonist and antagonist differs. Desma becomes so desperate about the science project and envy the perfect girl too much and she loses herself, shows the evil side of human beings. Hugo was treated more like a product or a "thing" for the science project, but at the end Desma finally comes to realise that Hugo is also a valuable life.
Hugo made me think, what is the really important thing? If there is something we really want to achieve, should we achieve this even by losing everything? Or is there other things in life which is far more important than trophies and praise?
