Literary terms of the Oscar 2009 animated short film "Oktapodi" (2007)
Setting
Two octopuses are having a romantic interaction
inside an aquarium of a kitchen. It follows with a human interruption,
endangering the existence of the two octopuses. As the female octopus gets caught
by a human, the male octopus follows the mini truck to save his beloved
partner. The pursuit continues dynamically in a small Greek village on the
seaside.
Conflict
Nature versus nurture. The octopuses are condemned
to give up their lives to be part of the food chain. Therefore, they must fight
for their existence against omnipotent human beings who are predators. Another
conflict is to be found in the ephemeral character of love, which can be stripped
away by an anomaly.
Climax
Triumph of love and reciprocal support. The
male octopus manages to bring back his partner with his ambitious efforts to
save her. The human predator falls into the sea but a flying predator catches
the male. The female now takes the heroic position to save the male octopus.
Symbol
Perennial conflict between nature and
nurture; octopuses represented as nature. The village symbolizes human
civilization, which is at the peril of the octopuses.
Irony
Poetic justice is to be found in the triumph
of love, which must constantly be updated through reciprocal commitments.
Responsibility is key for a prosperous relationship, ensuring a stable
connection. As the male octopus saves the female counterpart, the female octopus
must do so as well. The fact that it is unclear whether the male octopus will
be saved portrays the realistic prospect of relationships in general. We never
know what the future will unfold. However, by following the path of love,
something good will occur for sure.
Theme
Conflict between nature and humanity, joy
of love, playfulness, existentialism, reciprocity, hope.
