This happened at third avenue in certain town, summer night. This story was told by omniscient because we can see her feeling. Conflict is (a)her vs. herself and climax of this is, I think when her and his eyes met. At first I thought the climax is when he hit his head to a telephone pole, but this was after the eye contact.
In this story a woman symbolize feeling of sadness or depressed atmosphere or something like that, a young man symbolize hopefull or happy situations, a telephone pole and the sound made when he hit both symbolize a chance or opportunity or good sign. (I think the smell of the flowers may mean the same.) Also an ugly, gun-metal grey bridge is symbol of something opposite to a telephon pole and the sound.
I couldn't say what the irony was. Theme is that happiness or good situations exist everywhere but we rarely notice those without a chance, and don't put ourselves in bad thinking cycle.
I think there are some points I exaggerated. Thinking about literary terms is hard task for me.
