The setting of this story one night at the Third Avenue near the park.
It is told by the omniscient because the narrator knows the woman's feeling.
She has the conflict that she feels so sorry for herself because of her loneliness that she wants to jump off the bridge.
At the climax, the young man had hit the poll because he looked back at her.
I believe the bridge symbolizes her depression. She cannot think about something pleasant, and tend to see only something ugly like the bridge.
It is irony that young man's hitting makes her happy. It must be painful accident for him, but it saved her life.
The theme of this story is that the miracle sometimes happen. But you have to notice it at first to utilize it effectively in your life.
